Recovering from Identity Theft

If you are a victim of identity theft, take the following four steps as soon as possible, and keep a record with the details of your conversations and copies of all correspondence.

In you are using Cairn systems or if this impacts university systems or information, you should contact Technology Services immediately. If it is a private matter such as identity theft or bank account related issues, please see this article here from FTC for more guidelines.
Identity Theft defence usually involves four steps:

  1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, and review your credit reports.
  2. Close any accounts that you believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
  3. File a complaint with FTC.
  4. File a report with local police authorities. (See link above from FTC for more details on this)
